HOME, SWEET HOME - Galli-Curci 1917

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ast_ch1egl0&fmt=18

Home, Sweet Home

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home;
A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there,
Which, seek through the world, is ne'er met with elsewhere.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

An exile from home, splendor dazzles in vain;
Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again!
The birds singing gayly, that come at my call --
Give me them -- and the peace of mind, dearer than all!
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

I gaze on the moon as I tread the drear wild,
And feel that my mother now thinks of her child,
As she looks on that moon from our own cottage door

Thro' the woodbine, whose fragrance shall cheer me no more.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

How sweet 'tis to sit 'neath a fond father's smile,
And the caress of a mother to soothe and beguile!
Let others delight mid new pleasures to roam,
But give me, oh, give me, the pleasures of home.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

To thee I'll return, overburdened with care;
The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there;
No more from that cottage again will I roam;
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.
Home, home, sweet, sweet, home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

Chopin Nocturne F# Op 15 No 2 Michalowski Rec circa 1930

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGk4TTAL4Vw&fmt=18

A pupil of Carl Reinecke, Ignaz Moscheles, Carl Tausig and Karl Mikuli (Chopins pupil), Alexander Michalowski (1851-1938), spent most of his long career as a teacher at the Warsaw Conservatory where he imparted the Polish tradition of piano playing and the interpretation of Chopins music to his students. In his teaching, Michalowski emphasized the importance of contrapuntal playing and required his students to study and play the keyboard works of Bach. (Chopin revered Bach and his influence can be found throughout his music). Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that one of Michalowskis most famous pupils was Wanda Landowska. Other important students were Henrich Neuhaus, Micha Levtski and Vladimir Sofronitsky

The teacher of Nikolai Medner, Alexander Goldenweiser and Konstantin Igumnov, Paul Pabst was born in Germany in 1854. He began his studies with his father and then with Anton Door before going on to Franz Liszt. In 1878, Pabst captured the attention of Nikolai Rubinstein who invited him to join the piano faculty at the Moscow Conservatory. He was elevated to professor of high degree in 1881 joining Taneyev and Safonov. Pabst remained in that position until his death in 1897. His compositions include a piano concerto and a trio dedicated to the memory of Anton Rubinstein. But Pabst is best remembered today by his transcriptions of Tchaikovskys music. These paraphrases evidently delighted the composer who in turn dedicated his Polacca de Concert op.72 no.7 to Pabst. There is one extant letter written by Tchaikovsky to Pabst.

Mozart Fantasie in C minor K 396 Taneyev Rec 1891

Sergie Ivonovic Taneyev (1856-1915) was a very influential and highly regarded pianist, composer and teacher during the later 19th and early 20th.century. After entering the Moscow Conservatory at the age of nine, he studied piano with Nikolai Rubinstein (brother of Anton) and composition with Tchaikowsky. (Tchaikowsky was one of the original faculty members of the conservatory, teaching theory, harmony and composition from 1866, when the conservatory was founded, until 1878. Taneyev took over his classes after Tchaikowsky resigned in order to devote himself exclusively to composition).
Taneyev was obsessed with the scholarly pursuit of contrapuntal composition and his influence can be found in the music of (among others), Medtner and Rachmanonoff who were his students.
After graduating from the conservatory in 1875 having won the gold medal in both piano and composition, (he was the first to do so), Taneyev made his Moscow debut performing the Brahms D minor concerto. He became noted for his performances of the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven..

Tchaikowsky respected the opinion of his former student and frequently asked him to look over a recently completed composition. Often, the observations made by the scholarly and blunt speaking Taneyev, were not what the composer wanted to hear. Nonetheless, it was Taneyev who gave the Moscow premiere performance of Tchaikowskys First Piano Concerto in 1875 and the Russian premiere of his Second Piano Concerto. It was Taneyev who completed and premiered the Third Piano Concerto and Andante and Finale after the composers death.

Taneyev died in 1915 shortly after attending the funeral of Scriabin. (Scriabin was one of the many students who passed through Taneyevs composition class.).

Chopin Nocturne D flat Mendelssohn Spinning Song Diemer Rec 1904

Louis Diemer (1843-1919) was ten years old when he entered the Paris Conservatoire. A pupil of Antoine-Francois Marmontel (teacher of Albeniz, Debussy, Plante,) Diemer was awarded his primier priz in piano at the age 13. In the 1890s, Diemer founded the Societe des Instruments Anciens and gave recitals on the harpsichord. His advocacy of Baroque (particularly French) music influenced both Risler and Cortot who were his students.

Diemer continued to perform and teach until his death. His later students included Yves Nat, Marcel Ciampi, Robert Lorat and Robert Casadesus. (Casadesus was the only Diemer student that I ever heard perform)

Both Risler and Cortot became pupils of Louis Diemer after completing the preparatory classes of Emile Descombes , a disciple and perhaps student of Chopin. Both won the coveted premier prix while they were Diemers students--- Risler in 1889 and Cortot in 1896.

The Chopin nocturne is abridged and somewhat rushed toward the end to fit on one side of a ten inch record. James Methuen-Cambell (author of Chopin Playing) writes in his description of Diemer's performance as being, "animated and passionate and gives the listener a quite different insight into his artistry" ---- which was often considered to be dry and colorless. (This must be the first recording of this nocturne)

Diemers finger work in the Mendelssohn Spinning Song is superb.
