Bro 999,

When I was a primary school student, I had several classmates and some relatives who lived in Kowloon Wall City.  Besides that I lived nearby Kowloon Wall City and so I quite often went there to play with my friends.

Firstly, I recalled that my uncle told me that the water supply was pumped from a well and the smell of the boiled water (already cooled down) was so bad that I could not tolerate to drink.  However, my uncle told me that it was the characteristic of Kowloon Wall City.,

Secondly, many hawkers sold different kinds of food, like curried fish ball, ¤û¤°, ¨®¥Jnoodle, ¿N½æ¯»ªG....... and so on.  Most of hawkers sold different food and only a few of them sold the same kinds of products. All of them needed to pay "«OÅ@¶O" to the triad society members who controlled the area.  However, no police would catch these hawkers and even no police would patrol in Kowloon Wall City.  An interesting scenario was: many hawkers sold food in the opposite of the same street (Mei Tung Estate Road, the street was separted by a road) at Mei Tung Estate where the police («UºÙ" ¤E¤ý") would catch the hawkers who sold food there.  The hawkers at Mei Tung Estate would rush off to the road and to evade from the catch at the same street at Kowloon City Wall side.  These hawkers could only temporily placed their hawker stalls there and could not sell their food there since there was regulations set by the triad members.  Once the police left, they went back to thier site to continue their business.

Thirdly, if nobody guided you to walk in, you will easily lose your way.  Since I quite often went there to play with my friends and so I coulld walk in and out myself and no needed to have a guide.  You would find many dentists (without proper registered) opened their clinics there since no law had been levied to control Kowloon Wall City owing to the historical problem.

Fourthly, there were many food production industries at Kowloon Wall City, e.g. Fish Ball, Cow Meat Ball and different kinds of meat balls (cuttlefish, pork meat,....),  ¿N½æ¯»ªG, ÒÜ¥J¿|, ³½«C ( ·ÎÆC¤TÄ_ªºraw materials), traditional Chinese cakes(ªá¥Í¿}, »¿¼¿|....) and so on.  You should remember that all these food production workshops were no licences and the hygenic situation was ......

Nextly, I recalled many rats, cockroaches and other insects were easily found in Kowloon Wall City, the hygenic situation was very poor.  Besides that, many prostitutes worked nearly Carpenter Road, next to Kowloon City.  All these women were old and most of them were drug addicts.  I heard from my uncle that they usually charged $10 to $50 in price and their price depended on the ages, services and appearances.....

Finally, it was truth that many robberies, thefts and rapes happened at Kowloon Wall City.  I heard from my uncle that a young, pretty lady who walked past Carpenter Road to go back to her residential address at Kowloon City in late 1970s, the lady was so unlucky that she was caught by the bad guys and they caught her back to a Stone House at Kowloon Wall City which was next to Carpenter Road and the lady was raped by those guys  since police would not control or enforce their leagl authority at Kowloon Wall City.  The pretty young lady was a victim under the historical problem.

I was lucky that some of my classmates and my uncle were living there, so I had never meet any unlucky scenario. Besides that I am a boy, so I was not afraid of rape.  Touch wood, I had never met any Homosexual Guys, otherwise   ......

The above was my sharing for the Kowloon Wall City.

Bro 999,

You are so excellant that you can find so many photos to reflect the livings of  Kowloon Wall City.

I recalled the public tap as shown in your picture.  When I was young, my friends and I often washed our dirty hands or foot by turning on the public tap.  If my memory was correct, there were two public taps built on the Tung Tau Estate Road.

Both taps should be demolished in 1990s. At that time, the tenants has successfully compromised with Water Supplies Dept to build pipe system and they could enjoy clear wate in lieu of bad smell water pumped from well.
